Crescent Hotel

Location: Eureka Springs, Arkansas

History: The Crescent Hotel was built in May 1886 by the Eureka Springs Improvement Company and the Frisco Railroad. When it was completed, the Crescent Hotel was the most luxurious hotel in American; it cost $294,000 to build. The hotel held its own for a few years, but when it started to lose money the hotel was closed.

In 1908, the hotel was reopened as the Crescent College and Conservatory for Young Women, but eventually the school started losing money and it was closed in 1924. The school reopened in 1930 as a junior college, but closed again in 1934. After the junior college closed, the building was leased as a summer hotel to several different businesses.

In 1937, the Crescent was bought by millionaire inventory Norman Baker, who turned it into a hospital and health resort. Baker had been in trouble with the law many times, in fact he was ran out of Iowa for practicing medicine without a license. He claimed to have discovered a cure for cancer, so he moved his cancer patients to Arkansas to treat them. He was arrest and sent to jail for mail fraud; this left the hotel without an owner once again.

The hotel remained closed from 1940-1946 until it was purchased by four businessmen, who restored it back to its original state. The Crescent Hotel reopened its door on July 4, 1946. Since this last reopening, the Crescent Hotel has changed owners many time, but it is still open to this day.

Haunting: The Crescent Hotel has become famous for the numerous ghosts that haunt it. A ghost named Michael haunts room 218; he was a workman that fell from the hotel's roof while it was being built. He was killed instantly in the spot where he landed in room 218. Room 424 is haunted by the ghost of a woman named, Theodora.

The halls of the second and third floors are haunted by the ghosts of two nurses. One can been seen pushing a covered gurney and the other is often seen pushing a wheelchair. There are also reports of the ghost of a man walking around the lobby and the ghost of a woman in white wandering around the gardens.
