Lizzie Borden House

Location: Fall River, MA

History: The Lizzie Borden House was built in 1845 as a two family home. Andrew Borden bought the house to be close to his bank and various downtown business. After purchasing the home he converted it into a single family home.

The Murders

On August 4, 1892, Lizzie Borden discovered the body of her father on the first floor. She called to the maid, Bridget Sullivan, who was resting in her third floor room. Family friends searched the house and discovered Abby's body on the second floor. Both Andrew and Abby had been slain by multiple ax blows.

Although the weapon was not found and there were no traces of blood on Lizzie, a case was brought against her. The preliminary hearing was held in late August 1892 and the grand jury heard testimony in late November and early December.

At the grand jury hearing, Lizzie's friend Alice Russell testified that she saw her burning a dress after the murders. Defense attorneys claiming the dress was actually stained with paint. A local pharmacist claimed that Lizzie attempted to purchase poison from him a day before the crime.

The most damning evidence came when medical experts prove that Abby was killed about an hour and a half before Andrew, making it seem that the murderer was a family member instead of an outsider.

A turning point in the trial was the unveiling of the victims' skulls. Lizzie fainted and won sympathy from the all-male jury. She was acquitted on June 20, 1893, after only 68 minutes of deliberation.

Since the murders the house has been a private residence, but now the house has been restored and turned into a Bed and Breakfast.

Haunting: The voice of a woman softly weeping have been heard in the night. Shoes have been seen moving across the floor. Some claim to have seen the ghost of Abby tidying the room she died in or being tucked in at night by her.

Cold spots have been felt throughout the house and doors and shutters open and close by themselves.
