The beautiful historic homestead is known as Australia's most haunted and has hosted many paranormal groups like Castle of Spirits and AGHS. The tranquil country setting certainly belies the tragedies that occured during the early years.

Most of the hauntings seem to be from the Crawly family, owners of the property from 1884 until it fell into disrepair during the mid 1930's. The ghost of Mrs. Crawley can still be felt and seen in her old room. (this was certainly verified on a ghost tour I did last year). After Mr. Crawley's death in 1910 from an infected carbuncle, she only left the house twice, during her last 23 years. I think this is why you can still feel her presence, in fact during the ghost tour I did, a pyschic would not enter her room, he said she didn't want him in or anyone else in her room.

The house was nearly destroyed by the local myth of gold sovereign coins being buried on the property. Many treasure hunters tried without success to find the 10,000 gold coins Mr Crawley got from the sale of the hotel in Junee in the 1890's.

In 1954 a couple brought the property and set about restoring it to it's former glory, all blissfully unaware of the tragic history of this place. It wasn't long before the "former owners" made their presence known to the new owners. They had gone out one night only to return and find the house lit up like a christmas tree, only thing was there was no electricity connected to the house at the time. As soon as they got closer to the house, it fell into darkness unexplainably, and then the hauntings were experienced by themselves and other members of the family.

Ghost tours are held on nearly everynight of the week. This tour is so popular that the tours are booked out until the beginning of August. The tour where you stay the night is the one my girlfriend and I went on. Unfortunately you don't stay in the homestead but you do have accommodation with unseen guests from time to time. My girlfriend felt someone slide into bed with her, needless to say she slid out of bed rather fast. She is a medium and she didn't like what she was picking up.

There is a website to take a virtual tour of this magnificent homestead.

If I can find the disc I put the photos on of the ghost tour I did, I will post them for you to see.

Forgot to add that an Australian TV reality show called Scream Test used Montecristo as one of their haunted locations in 2001.

The host of the TV show was a sceptic until the ghost of a little girl sat in her lap in the mobile control van, and then left abruptly causing all sorts of audio and video problems.

One of the contestants had problems with her equipment during that night when the light on her digital video recorder kept flashing on and off. But this only occurred when she pointed the camera at herself. apparently the crew thought that it was due to the automatic exposure of the camera, but when they tried to duplicate the effect, they couldn't...
